Celebrating the Autumnal Equinox at the Sun Circle
A couple dozen hardy souls braved rain and wind at dawn to celebrate the first day of fall Friday at the Sun Circle on Preston Beach.
“I love the fall equinox and I like to come for the first day of all four seasons,” said Maura McCormick, of Swampscott.
Asked if the rain made her think twice about getting out of bed at 6 a.m., she answered, “No way. I wouldn’t miss it.”
The Clifton Improvement Association has been running equinox and solstice celebrations since 2009 when it built the Sun Circle, a series of seven-foot-tall stones that help mark the sun’s path and the changing seasons. On an equinox, the sun’s light travels between a circular gap in two stones, creating a sunburst.
This year, however, rain and clouds blocked the sun. Wild waves crashing against the shore created a different mood....
